Although most PrEP strategies and programs have focused on other populations, formative research conducted by the Mpilo Project in South Africa found that PrEP may also be beneficial and appealing to a substantial segment of heterosexual men.

From August 2021 to July 2022 the project implemented a pilot study providing PrEP to 564 men, free of charge, in partnership with the GP Care Cell, a network of private GP practices. PrEP was provided by eight general practitioners around Johannesburg following recruitment by health promoters in public spaces in proximity to their practices.

The aim of the pilot study was to assess participating men’s demographic and behavioural characteristics, interest in PrEP, and experience of PrEP use.

In this webinar the implementers will present results and lessons from the pilot on topics including awareness, access, uptake, persistence, flexible use, risk perception, and stigma.

This webinar is being presented by PSI.
