PrEP rings use antiretroviral drugs in silicone rings that can be inserted in the vagina for long-acting, topical, and localized protection against HIV at the site of infection. Women’s health advocates have long championed the need for a discreet product that women exclusively control.

To date, there is one ring product approved, using the drug dapivirine for monthly protection. Find more information on this product on our page on the dapivirine vaginal ring.

Other ring products are in development. Future rings may be even longer acting or incorporate multipurpose technologies allowing for prevention of pregnancy, other sexually transmitted infections or diseases.
